Californication: the road trip

The splendid mountains, the palm-lined avenues of Palm Springs and the Coachella valley were not the only backdrops to our American photo shoots.

We also went in search of those iconic places that you can’t help but associate with the USA.

For most people, the Motel is the single biggest icon of any classic ‘on the road’ trip in the United States. One of our stopovers was the Harmony Motel in Twentynine Palms. Little more than a ghost town, this place sits on the State Route 62 on the way to Joshua Tree National Park.

The Band U2 made this hotel famous, staying here in 1986 while on holiday in America looking for new musical inspiration. Music that was released a year later in the incredible album Joshua Tree, produced by Daniel Lanois with Brian Eno, which this year celebrates its 30th anniversary.

But our road trip is not just following in the wake of music memories that are part of the legend… In fact, with Nima Benati we have done a photographic remake of one of Patrizia’s favourite films…
